Get ready for the time of your life when you Hang Glide! Training times vary according to the student and type of conditions during training, but most students will spend between 5 and 10 lessons to obtain the first Beginner USHGA pilot rating. Typically, it takes between 3-6 months to become certified.

BEGINNER HANG GLIDING RATING
Beginner Rating Foot Launch - Required Witnessed Tasks To earn this beginner rating you must be able to demonstrate the proper set-up and handling of equipment, and prove that you understand how wind conditions affect flight. You must also demonstrate a smooth flight and landing and proper post-landing procedure. A written exam is also required.

Beginner Rating Tow Launch - Required Witnessed Tasks In addition to mastery of all the above requirements, you must demonstrate system set-up and pre-flight for the specific tow system, and your understanding of normal and emergency procedures. You must show a smooth transition to flying and discuss all Towing Discussion Topics with the issuing Tow Official.

Beginner Rating - Tandem To earn this rating, you must understand the parts of the glider, the effects of crosswind, and demonstrate that you can fly with your head up to scan the horizon. You must display altitude awareness, demonstrate proper post-landing procedures, and pass a written exam.
